English as an Additional Language (Intermediate)

Pupils are fully integrated into the classroom and receive support from our team of co-teachers each day. Our English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers plan lessons with every year level homeroom teacher so even when they are not in the class, the EAL pupils receive English language support from the class teacher. This is available to pupils enrolling into Year 1 to Year 9, who have an intermediate to high level of English proficiency.

Pupils are placed with a class teacher and will be fully immersed in the year level content, allowing them to learn alongside their year level peers throughout the day. These pupils are taught by their class teachers and subject teachers, along with highly qualified English Language Acquisition teachers.

An Individualised Approach to Language Learning

Our English as an Additional Language (Intermediate) programme is designed with the younger learners in mind. Our pupils may have had limited exposure to the English language, and this approach is designed to make the learning experience an enjoyable one. In collaboration with class teachers, our EAL Specialist will support pupils through small group or individual ‘pull-out’ sessions, as well as with ‘push-in’ support. The nature, and number of ‘pull-out’ and ‘push-in’ sessions will vary, depending on the level of support, timetabling and pupil’s needs.

Pull-Out Sessions

During ‘pull-out’ sessions, pupils receive intensive and tailored English language instruction within a 1-on-1 or small group setting outside of the main classroom. Depending on the pupil’s needs, he/she may be pulled-out from different subjects based on the linguistic difficulty of the subject. The 1-on-1 or small group setting allows pupils to practise speaking skills, ask questions and receive personalised instruction from the EALSpecialist, with the teaching approach tailored specifically to the learning needs.

Push-In Classes

During ‘push-in’ sessions, pupils will learn alongside their classroom peers and also receive in-class support from the EAL Specialist. Alongside the subject teacher and classroom instruction, the EAL Specialist will provide support in the context of the content that is being studied in the classroom environment. EAL pupils gain language support, while studying the core curriculum with their peers, promoting opportunities to collaborate, practise social communication skills and develop confidence in their linguistic abilities.
